Community rallies around former University of Minnesota star

O'Brien faces eighth cancer diagnosis

Casey O'Brien, University of Minnesota's legendary kicker and three-time All-American, is battling cancer for the eighth time. The community has rallied around the former Gopher, with donations pouring in to support his fight.

O'Brien, who played for the Gophers from 1998 to 2001, was first diagnosed with melanoma in 2007. He has since been diagnosed with seven other types of cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, and colon cancer.

Despite his numerous health challenges, O'Brien has remained positive and determined. He has continued to work as a motivational speaker and has raised awareness for cancer research. In 2019, he was inducted into the University of Minnesota Athletics Hall of Fame.

O'Brien's latest cancer diagnosis came in 2023. He is currently undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help O'Brien with his medical expenses. As of January 2023, the page has raised over $100,000.

The community has also rallied around O'Brien in other ways. A group of his former teammates organized a benefit dinner in his honor. The event raised over $50,000.

O'Brien's story is an inspiration to many. He has shown that even in the face of adversity, it is possible to remain positive and never give up.
